This sample trek explores some of the most striking features of the Simien Mountains National Park, a UNESCO world heritage site that is home to one of the largest mountain ranges in Africa. The trek follows an extensive network of trails used by the local people to travel between the villages on the lower slopes or to reach the high pastures. The first three days of our expedition follows the same schedule as the first three days of the Sankaber-Gich-Chennek trek. On day 4 we begin our trek towards the distant Ras Dashen by ascending eastwards from Chennek camp, our climb of Buhawit pass (4,200m) affording fine views of the verdant valley that we are leaving, of Buwahit peak to our right and ahead over the very different landscape of the Menesha River valley and its tributaries to Ras Dashen beyond.

The Danakil Depression, part of the homeland of the Afar people in North-Eastern Ethiopia, is a desert basin which lies up to 100 m below sea level. The expedition begins in a convoy of two 4x4 vehicles, each vehicle driven by an experienced driver with whom North Expeditions have a long and reliable working relationship. During the drive, we have the opportunity to visit the nomadic way of life of the people of afar, and to encounter the salt caravans that traverse the highlands of Tigray.
